Sept. 8, 2013

We decided to go through the Chateau de Mores, which is a 26 room home, built by The Marquis De Mores.  He was a French aristocrat who came to Medora in 1883 to find fortune in the cattle industry.  He built a packing plant, bought cattle and land and was quite prosperous at first.  He built houses, businesses and a Catholic Church, and named the town after his wife, Medora.  She was the daughter of an international banker from NYC, so both families were wealthy.  They were both skilled hunters, and had many hunting trips with their friends.    By 1886 the packing plant failed due to his neglect, and bad and weather and drought played a large part of his failure, as well. They moved out and returned to the east.  They had been married 13 years and had 3 children, when the Marquis traveled to Africa and was killed by tribesmen.  Our time in Medora will end, but there is a lot of history here and we found it an interesting stop.
