Oct. 8, 2013 Port Townsend, WA
We called ahead to reserve a spot in the Fort Worden
State Park, and they couldn’t give us a week, due to a busy weekend influx of
people. I guess it’s much like our parks
back home. Everyone comes out for the
weekend, so we will have to make our weekend plans a little more in
advance.
We drove up along the Hood Canal, bringing us into Port
Townsend. We had rain this morning when
we left the Olympia area, and sporadically on the way up, but it was a
beautiful sunny day at Fort Worden. We
settled into our spot, where we have views of an old lighthouse and the
Strait of Juan de Fuca. We decided to
go geo-caching, and our first destination was to go to Artillery Hill, which is
where the fort built a place to house the guns used to protect Puget Sound and
the surrounding area. It was very
interesting and quite well preserved. It
was constructed from 1897 to 1904 with some changes later on. We got a nice little hike in and got educated
at the same time. We would have never found this place if it weren't for geo-caching. How many times will I say that on this trip?
Port Townsend is a very quaint little town, with lots of
very nice Victorian homes. Fort Worden
is on the tip of the peninsula, just north of Port Townsend. We are going to have to cram a lot into the
next two days, if we have to leave on Friday.
